Book Clubs Update

During this period of self isolation, a number of our books clubs have chosen to meet remotely. What follows are updates to each book club, as well as some reading recommendations if you’re looking for your next great read! Click on the name of the book club to be redirected to their page with the books to purchase, or click on the book club button to see all the book clubs and navigate from there. All of the book club books, both upcoming and previous selections, are on display in the front corner of the store with Reese’s Picks, Indie Next Picks (new & paperback) and signed copies. While we normally offer a discount on book club books, we can’t right now, but we can offer you FREE shipping!

Towne Book Center (TBC) Book Club

Meeting Virtually

Also known as “THE” Book Club, and “The Original” Book Club, the TBC Book Club has been meeting since our Trappe days, starting over 16 years ago! Former staff member Pam and her side kick, long time staff member Mary, run the original book club and longtime customers refer to the book club as “Mary’s Book Club.” They read a variety of fiction and nonfiction books across many genres, and most of their selections have been New York Times and Indie Bestsellers. The members of the book club all submit books to be voted on by the group as a whole to determine reading selections and the group averages 20 people per meeting. The TBC Book Club also frequently hosts the authors of some of their selections.
TBC Book Club meets on the 1st Wednesday of the month at 7pm and is continuing to meet virtually while the store is closed. Below are both upcoming books and previous selections!

YA (Young Adult) for All Book Club

Not Meeting Virtually

The YA for All Book Club started in the summer of 2019 and is led by our two YA enthusiasts on staff, Anna and Marielle. The YA for All Book Club reads books exclusively from our young adult section and choose mostly fiction works across a variety of subgenres. Most of the selections are by lesser known authors, but bestsellers have also been included in month’s past. Book selections are done collaboratively within the book club.
YA for All Book Club meets on the 1st Thursday of the month at 7pm and is NOT meeting while the store is closed. Below are both upcoming books for when they meet again and previous selections!

Science Fiction & Fantasy Book Club

Not Meeting Virtually

The Science Fiction & Fantasy Book Club started in 2019 as well, and is led by Towne’s new managing partner, Drew. Selections range from literary speculative fiction to hard science fiction and selections are selected by the group as a whole, often alternating between science fiction and fantasy each month.  Science Fiction & Fantasy Book Club is our only weekend and only day time book club.
Science Fiction & Fantasy Book Club meets on the 2nd Sunday of the month at 11am and will be relaunching with new book titles and selections once the store reopens! Previously selections are featured here.

Page to Screen Book Club

Not Meeting Virtually

The Page to Screen Book Club is a new addition to the book club list for 2020 and inspired by another book club we discovered at another bookstore. Each month a different staff member will lead this group and will include a mix of books tied to recent releases as well as old favorites. Selections will include adaptions into both feature films and series on streaming platforms and books will be from a variety of genres.
Page to Screen Book Club meets on the 2nd Tuesday of the month at 7pm and will be hosting their first meeting once we are able to reopen the store! Below are the first few selections for the group!

Rainbow Reads Book Club

The Rainbow Reads Book Club is another 2019 addition to our book club offerings and is led by Towne customer Emma. All the selections for the Rainbow Reads Book Club feature protagonists who are members of the LGBTQ+ community. For the time being as the group continues to grow, each month’s selection is picked by Emma and she’s done a FABULOUS job thus far!
Rainbow Reads Book Club meets on the 2nd Wednesday of the month at 7pm and upcoming and previous selections are featured below!

Literary Fiction Book Club

The Literary Fiction Book Club has been meeting at Towne since the mid-2010s and is led by longtime Towne customer Kathy. The Literary Fiction Book Club reads exclusively fiction but across a variety of subgenres and most of the club’s selections have won prestigious literary awards and some have been New York Times and Indie Bestsellers. Selections are voted on by members of the group as a whole.
Literary Fiction Book Club meets on the 2nd Thursday of the month at 7pm and upcoming and previous selections are featured below!

Enthralling Fiction Book Club

Not Meeting Virtually

The Enthralling Fiction Book Club is another new book club for 2020 and will be led by staff member Pam and will include selections of contemporary women’s fiction, domestic thrillers, and historical fiction. The selections in this book club will be similar in style as those of Reese Witherspoon’s Book Club.
Enthralling Fiction Book Club meets on the 3rd Monday of the month at 7pm and will be hosting their first meeting once we are able to reopen the store! Below are the first few selections for the group!

Poetry Book Club & Workshop

Not Meeting Virtually

The Poetry Book Club & Workshop is yet another new book club for 2020 and will be two-fold into its purpose. Led by newest staff member and poetry enthusiast Christopher, the meeting will begin with a discussion of the month’s poetry selection and will be followed by a workshop of members own poetry. Come for both parts or just one, we’d love to have anyone interested in exploring the vast world of poetry join us!

BiblioTherapy Book Club

Not Meeting Virtually

The BiblioTherapy Book Club (formerlly the Helping Professionals Book Club) is recent edition to our book club list, starting just before the holidays in 2019. They are led by Towne customer Annalisa and read books primarily from our psychology section. Most of the selections have been New York Times or Indie Bestsellers. Books each month are picked collaboratively by the group the month before each meeting.
BiblioTherapy Book Club meets on the 3rd Wednesday of the month at 7pm and below are some former selections the group has read. They will resume in-person meetings when the store reopens.

1,000 Books to Read Before You Die Book Club

Meeting Virtually

This book club is unique in that all of the selections are from the Workman publication of the same title. 1,000 Books to Read Before You Die is led by staff member Charlie and started in 2019. While every selection comes from the book, members vote on which titles to read and the selections range from classics to contemporary nonfiction! There’s sure to be something to suit every reader!

Classics Book Club

Meeting Virtually

The Classics Book Club has been meeting at Towne since the mid-2010s and is led by longtime Towne customer Kathy. The club reads just as the name would suggest – the classics! Anything from Austen to Zola is included in the selections and books are voted on by the members of the book club.
Classics Book Club meets on the 4th Tuesday of the month at 7pm and below are some upcoming and former selections.

Nonfiction Book Club

Meeting Virtually

The Nonfiction Book Club was the first to join our new selection of book clubs in early 2019 and this group reads exclusively nonfiction, but across many genres. From history and science to nature and biography, they read it all! The Nonfiction Book Club is led by Towne manager Sarah and she would love for you to stop by and join in on their discussions!
Nonfiction Book Club meets on the 4th Wednesday of the month at 7pm. They will be discussing their original March selection in April and will continue with virtual meetings while the store is closed.

The 4th Monday of the month is usually the meeting time for our Silent Book Club and it will resume again when we are able to reopen the store.
